As of 31st August 2019 the Works with Nest program has been retired.
If you are an existing Roost user, you are unaffected by this unless you migrate your Nest account to a Google account. Sadly new Works with Nest connections are no longer possible, so if you're not currently a Roost user you are out of luck!

What I really want is an easy-to-glance display of my Nest devices for my Windows® PC…
You're in luck! With Roost Desktop Notifier, there's now an app for that.☺
What is Roost?
A free Windows desktop app that keeps you connected to your Nest Learning Thermostat™ and Nest Protect™ devices when you're at your PC.
It shows icons for your Nest devices in the notification area of your taskbar, down by the clock, normally in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Each Nest Learning Thermostat gets its own icon, while Nest Protects get one icon per home. The icons gently fade and transition to let you know what's going on.
You get a discrete notification when a thermostat notices an interesting change (such as your heating turning on) or an alert if a Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide (subject to the Terms of Service, please read those, right?).
Roost Desktop Notifier supports the Nest Learning Thermostat in Heat, Cool and Heat • Cool modes. Temperatures are shown in Celsius or Fahrenheit, depending on your Nest settings. It will work nicely if you have just one Nest Thermostat, a single Nest Protect or lots of both in one or two homes!

What else can I do with it?
Click an icon to show a popup containing more info about a Nest thermostat, or about the Nest Protects in your home. You can pin a popup, or just let it fade away after a few seconds. The thermostat popup even shows your local weather!
Too cold or too hot? Just right-click a thermostat icon to nudge the target temperature up or down.
If you're about to leave the house or are leaving work to come home you can right-click a thermostat icon to set away mode.
What if English isn't my preferred language?
If you're a French speaker then you'll be happy to know that Roost Desktop Notifier speaks French too! It will automatically switch to French if your PC is set that way, or you can manually change the language if you prefer.

Requirements
- Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10
- .NET Framework 4.5 (auto-installed if not present, which may require a restart of your PC)
- A browser other than Internet Explorer set as your default browser (for setup only, when you connect Roost Desktop Notifier to your Nest account)
- In order to communicate with the Nest cloud servers, port 9553 must be open on your firewall (this may be blocked if you're on a corporate network, but shouldn't be a problem if you're using your home internet connection)
Updates
Roost Desktop Notifier checks for updates on startup, so from time-to-time it might prompt you to download a new version that may contain bug fixes or new features.

But I want more, how about a light?
Hey, it's your lucky day! Roost Desktop Notifier also supports the excellent full-colour blink(1) indicator light from ThingM.
Simply plug a blink(1) into a spare USB port on your PC and it will glow orange or blue when your Nest Thermostat is heating or cooling, or a pleasing green if you've earned a leaf.
It will flash warning yellow or emergency red if any of your Nest Protects have detected a smoke or CO warning or emergency.
Known issues
- Some users have reported getting intermittent blocked errors. These are coming from the Nest servers. If this happens, please go to the Advanced tab in Settings and change Refresh my Nest devices every to a larger value.
- During install, Windows SmartScreen might present a warning dialog. To continue the install, just select More info and then Run anyway.

This is beta software, so there may be bugs.
Roost Desktop Notifier ('this Software') offers no guarantee of service, and may stop working at any time. It must not be relied upon to provide notifications from any Nest devices. By using this Software, you are acknowledging that you agree to these terms. If you do not agree to these terms you must stop using this Software and remove it from your computer.
This Software is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
If you have a Nest Protect and this Software does not report any warning or emergency it, this does not mean that all is necessarily well. Do not rely on this Software to provide safety-critical information.
This Software uses a 'Works with Nest' connection to access your Nest devices, which requires you to enter your Nest account credentials. This information is sent securely to Nest, and not stored or used by this Software in any other way. See the Nest website for more information.
